La Posada Winslow
Winslow, AZ
La Posada, the Last Great Railroad Hotel, was built as an architectural fantasy in 1928 by Mary Colter, one of the most influential designers in the Southwest, by request of the Fred Harvey Company.
Colter created an imaginary timber and cattle baron - a Spanish Don - and built for him a magnificent hacienda. To enter the building is to enter another era - like visiting an old castle in Spain or colonial Mexico.
La Posada was built in they style of the late 1700's at a cost rumored at $2 million - an astonishing sum for the day. The main house of 68,000 square feet is bigger than Hearst Castle.
La Posada was only open from 1930 to 1957, then closed to the public. It was almost knocked down many times. Today everything is being restored - acres of gardens, beautiful painted ceilings, stone floors, faux-adobe walls.
Guest room selection include Standard Rooms with one king, one queen, or two full or twin beds, Balcony Rooms, Jacuzzi Rooms, oversized Deluxe Rooms and Suites with two connected bedrooms.
